Johnny Depp (born John Christopher Depp II on June 9, 1963) is an Academy Award-nominated American actor, known for his affinity for somewhat eccentric and varied character roles.

After making his film debut in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street, Depp came to fame on the television series 21 Jump Street, before establishing a career in Hollywood films, including well-received starring roles in the 1990s films Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco and Sleepy Hollow.

In 2003, Depp's Oscar-nominated performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl re-established him as a leading man, leading to roles in the successful films Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. His latest film is the musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street directed by Tim Burton.

In my opinion…

People like him are an exception: he's such an incredible actor, a true artist. His body of work speaks volumes, and I don't think anyone can come near him. His remarkable career has been defined by its diversity and veracity and the choices he has made have been just exceptional and brave.

I've seen 34 of his movies (+ 21 Jump Street and small appearances) and I'm lucky enough to own almost all of them. I'm always in awe by his versatile talent: he doesn't just act, he transforms into the characters he plays. Like journalist Stephanie Zacharek says, you can't afford to take your eyes off him for an instant. He wastes no line, expression or arc of movement. The uniqueness of both the characters he has portrayed, and the movies he has made, further emphasize his passion and integrity.

In addition, Johnny seems to be a kind, generous, wildly funny, considerate and modest guy. He's an irreplaceable gift to the contemporary world cinema.

If I ever had the chance to meet him, I'd just want to thank him for being him.
